As I've mentioned before, more than video games I tend to be a movie person. Unfortunately, those two worlds rarely intersect with much success. Video game adaptations of movies are often disappointing and flat, while movie adaptations of video games are often visually stunning but low on actual story (something I've always considered ironic considering how strong the stories of some video games are).Often, the best combination of games and movies are adaptations of existing video games, re-themed or re-skinned to serve as a promotional tool for the movie.

Take last week's latest Angry Birds incarnation, for example. Based on the upcoming animated film, Rio (which is about a group of birds), the game takes the popular gameplay and characters of the Angry Birds games by creating new levels and inserting the characters from Rio. The result is a strong addition to the Angry Birds lineup and a nice promotional tool for the movie.

With Angry Birds: Rio such a success, we're looking at other movies coming out this year. Certainly most of them will have their own video game adaptations, but what existing games could be modified to serve as a solid promotional tool for some of this summer's blockbusters? (Note: None of these games are currently planned as far as we know. This is simply speculation about what could be some cool game adaptations)

Angry Birds: First Class - The latest chapter in the X-Men saga comes out this summer, serving up a prequel with X-Men: First Class. Imagine the Angry Birds replaced with the playful heads of Charles Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and other X-Men. Charles could replace the Blue Bird, sending out waves of psychic power, while Beast replaces the Black Bird, exploding from human form to bestial form like he will in the movie. Add in some timely JFK quotes like they have in the trailer, and you've got a marketing hit!

Lane Splitter: Cars Edition - What better way to promote the race at the heart of Cars 2's spy storyline than to have a game centered around racing? The iOS game Lane Splitter which makes use of the gyrosensitivity of Apple's devices should work nicely, providing a game that's fun for both kids and adults. Imagine playing as Lightning McQueen as he races around the world, maybe with demolition derby bonus levels that make use of Lightning's buddy, Mater. Of course, Cars is really forward thinking, as the same game could handle a Fast Five adaption before the Disney flick hits theaters.

Thor's Ragdoll Physics - Maybe ragdoll physics games don't seem the most appropriate for a godly figure like Thor, but it could be a fun time waster to have Thor toss himself forward using his hammer and see how far he can go, and how many obstacles he can pass by on the way down. Make Thor look super cool and it's unlikely anyone would care that the game simply transforms him into a ragdoll.

Harry Potter's Words with Friends - Based on the popular Scrabblesque title Words with Friends, this Harry Potter themed adaptation could have a more wizardly appearance, as well as allow players to get bonus points for spelling out words from the Potter universe. Muggle? Stupify? Avada Kedavra? None of them may be legal play in the original Words with Friends, but in this version they'd all be worth extra points!

Cowboys vs. Aliens (based on Plants vs. Zombies) - Both the Plants vs. Zombies game and the Cowboys & Aliens comic book start with the premise of having two unlikely opposing forces in conflict, so adapting the game to a theme that ties in with the movie seems like a natural fit. I suspect the game would have to be changed far too much in order to make this sort of adaptation make any sort of sense, but then again Independence Day once had a Space Invaders themed minigame, which made almost no sense, so maybe plantlike Cowboys isn't too much of a stretch after all.

Captain America fights World War I - Last, another proposed adaptation for another Marvel movie (Marvel really is coming out in force this summer). World War already lets players face off against each other in a futuristic war setting. With this adaptation the game would move backwards to World War I. Players would fight alongside Captain America or the Red Skull, tying in with this summer's Captain America: The First Avenger film. Expect complaints from parents about allowing children to fight alongside the Nazi powers, which (as usual in the video game industry) will boost sales before the game gets pulled from digital shelves.

What simple game adaptations can you think of for movie marketing?
