Halloween is quickly creeping up on us once again, with all of its ghostly tales, ghoulish costumes, and more candy than you can shake a broomstick at. It's not just the real world that gets into the Halloween spirit, though. A lot of your favorite virtual getaway spots have also lit the candle in their Jack-o-lanterns, cranked up the spooky music, filled their candy bowls, and are offering gamers another way to get in some trick-or-treating fun. So we here at The Clik have thrown on our costumes and knocked on some doors to find out just how your favorite games are celebrating this Halloween. Here's a quick rundown of some of the best Halloween offerings happening this week. So check 'em out and be sure to fill your gaming goodie bag with nothing but the sweetest in virtual treats.
World of Warcraft

With a game like World of Warcraft, inhabited by all manner of creatures from dwarves and trolls to dragons and demons, you'd think that every day is Halloween. However, like the rest of us, the folks in Azeroth enjoy getting a few extra treats this time of the year as well. During the game's Hallow's End event, Jack-o-lanterns and other Halloween decorations litter the streets. Players can go trick or treating at the nearest innkeeper for a tasty bag o' sweets ... or maybe find themselves turned into a cat, a skeleton, or any number of other tricky forms. But what would Halloween, oops, I mean "Hallow's End" be without a good ghost story? Player can learn the tale of the Headless Horseman, a creature of myth who rides the skies on his fiery steed, bringing wrath down on the villages of Azeroth in a hail of fire and brimstone. While the lower level players can help quell the fires the Horseman leaves in his wake, it's up to the higher level players to face him head-on (or head-off) to finally put his soul to rest. And hey, if you're lucky enough, you might even ride off into the sunset on the Horseman's mount as a reward for your troubles.
EverQuest / EverQuest II
Azeroth isn't the only fantasy world dealing with some supernatural spooks this Halloween. Over at Sony Online Entertainment's MMO juggernauts EverQuest and EverQuest 2, gamers are getting a double dose of frightful fun. First, over in the original EverQuest, players have discovered that the Scroll of the Skinwalker is wreaking havoc on Illis Taberish. In this new horror-themed quest, players are challenged to track down and take down the Skinwalker before he traps the souls of the innocent and feasts on their flesh.
Meanwhile, over in EverQuest 2, players have their hands full with this year's Night of the Dead celebration. Aside from the brand new "Nights of the Dead Devotee" quests, New Halas is decked out with some cool and spooky decorations to fit the Halloween mood. Players can also buy a few new costume illusions from holiday merchants and revisit their favorite quests and events from past Nights of the Dead celebrations, including trick-or-treating in Qeynos and visiting haunted houses in Freeport, for some fresh new rewards.
Free Realms

What's that? You're looking for more fun than frights in your gaming? Well Free Realms has got you covered this year as werewolves and vampires crash the party in this year's Super Spooktacular. In true Twilight fashion, players can pick a side by dressing up in new werewolf and vampire costumes, while heading out to Blackspore Cemetery to decide which is the better monster. The Free Realms Super Spooktacular update doesn't stop there, though. The game also features daily trick-or-treating, creepy new quests, and lots of cool costumes for players and their pets. And if you can't find any good Halloween parties in your neighborhood, the folks at Free Realms community team are also scheduling live in-game costume parties to celebrate the occasion.
Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures
Even in a galaxy far, far away, players can't escape the Vader-esque grip of the holiday. Over at Sony Online Entertainment's other big free-to-play MMO, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, the spirit of Halloween has managed to "Force" its way into the Jedi Temple. Sith O'Lanterns and Battle Droid Scarecrows are line the temple floors, and players can pick up new costumes for themselves and their pets, new spooky decorations for their houses, and even a limited Halloween themed "J-4CK" astromech droid pet. And if you don't want to shell out the credits for the Halloween goodies, you can head on over to the Lounge every day and pick up a free paper mask of many of your favorite Star Wars icons. There's also a special Halloween edition of the Rocket Rescue minigame, which features R2-D2 flying around in a fun ghost costume. And finally, there are live in-game Live Halloween "Emissary Events" scheduled for October 27 and 29 and November 5 at 3 PM PST/6 PM EST.
Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network

Last up on our list of Halloween treats for gamers is a little something for the console gamers out there. Both Microsoft and Sony have lined up some fun little treats for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners respectively. Both companies are letting gamers play a little dress-up with new Halloween costumes available for their Xbox LIVE Avatars or in PlayStation Home. Everything from zombies to clowns are covered (though not zombie clowns for some reason). Also, both systems are spotlighting all sorts of spooky goodies, from Double Fine's new downloadable title, Costume Quest, to the new Undead Nightmare addition to Rockstar's hit western, Red Dead Redemption. And if you just want to settle down for the night with a scary movie, there are plenty of deals to be found in both console's video libraries. Sony's even tossed PS3/PSP owners a couple free slasher movie rentals this week for good measure.
These are just a few of the great Halloween events happening for gamers this week. There are more to be found all over the place, regardless of what games you play or what systems you play on. You can dress up, dress down, go spooky or kooky. There's no shortage of Halloween treats available to gamers this year. So feel free to turn off the porch light and blow out that Jack-o-lantern's candle this weekend. All the Halloween fun you need can be found just inside your favorite games.
