"New Super Mario Bros. Wii" gives gamers and whole new way to relive the Super Mario Bros. experience on the Wii. Just like every new Mario installment, it's got new items, new levels and new gameplay with four players able to join in on the action - but we want more, and we don't mean Mario. The "New" formula works so well with "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" that we felt it necessary to rack our brains for five of our favorite retro games that could use the "New" treatment to bring new life back into the franchise for a whole new generation to enjoy on Nintendo's casual console, because after all - nothing says "New" like old.
NEW KIRBY'S DREAMLAND
Everyone knows Kirby, the round and pink little dude with the ability to eat enemies and copy their special abilities. The hungriest pink ball of fluff in Nintendo's library has had a rough life since the original Kirby's Dreamland series. With the Nintendo DS getting "Kirby: Canvas Curse" and "Kirby: Squeak Squad", neither really captures the essence of Kirby nor brings his classic formula back for a new generation to enjoy.
Nintendo needs to head back in time to Kirby's Dreamland 3 but with a few new twists; let the player store up to 3 types of enemies to call upon for a light snack and extra power and bring back his buddies Rick the Hamster, Koo the Owl and Kine the Ocean Sunfish. While Kirby should eventually work his way up to the four-player free-for-all in "New Super Mario Bros.", for the first installment of "New" Kirby's Dreamland, it would have to be simple - only one player for this go-round.
NEW STAR FOX
The classic "Star Fox" got so much closer to the "New" makeover in "Star Fox 64", but without a new game featuring Fox McCloud and his band of merry animal compatriots piloting starfighters in a few years, it's well past due for a remake. The first and most essential concept that needs to come back is on-rails missions. Put the starships back on rails for levels and get rid of the on-foot segments. Star Fox is at its best when the player is blasting enemy starships and out-maneuvering fire from their opponents.
For the "New" version, take a cue from the "WarioWare: Smooth Moves" minigame and use the Wii remote to fly the ship and control weapons. Use a split screen to add on another player to defeat the evil Andross and bring peace back to the Lylat system. "New" Star Fox could take a cue from the games of old and scatter power-ups along the board for a quick boost of speed or upgraded weapons - and like all "New" versions of these classic games, items could be stored, won or purchased to be used at a later time.
NEW KID CHAMELEON
Perhaps some don't remember the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive classic "Kid Chameleon", where an evil virtual reality game villain has kidnapped players to the video game world. Kid Chameleon, the only player to master the game, is the only hope of the captured players using his ability to don different masks to morph into different characters including the super-durable Iron Knight, the tornado-flying Cyclone and the tiny but effective MicroMax.
Kid Chameleon is well overdue for an upgrade, having only one game in the history of home consoles. Bring back the nine original mask heroes and add a few more to mix it up, such as a mask that endows Kid with the power of super-speed or the ability to freeze opponents in place. Wii motion controls would be a welcome addition to this console classic remaster, using a quick shake of the remote to activate new special abilities for each character. In the original, Kid could only don one mask at a time, but with a "New" makeover, players could store masks for use within a level as well as combine them for different effects and brand new masks.
NEW FROGGER
What makes the "Frogger" experience so compelling is the frenetic and confusing patterns of traffic that players navigate as the tiny titular amphibian, so what could possible add to the traffic challenge? One word: Multiplayer.
Adding three other players to the "Frogger" formula would not only add to the challenge and speed of the game, but would give players a new level of fun not usually had in the casual and repetitive traffic patterns. Giving players the option to complete the level at their own pace while attempting to force other players directly into traffic would create an experience for the next generation of players to enjoy truly worthy of a "New" prefix.
NEW SONIC THE HEDGEHOG
It's impossible to make a list for "New" remakes without including Sega's Blue Blur, Sonic. While Mario is all about figuring out secrets and getting through levels at your own pace, Sonic is all about speed. The Nintendo DS game "Sonic Rush" understood this better than any other Sonic game to date, giving Sonic back his patented speed in a 2D environment for handheld - but it's time to bring it back to console and back to basics.
"New" Sonic The Hedgehog would herald the return of the hidden giant ring bonus levels in "Sonic 3" as well as Sonic's two-tailed fox buddy, Tails. The two can once again team up to fly to secret areas and double-team bosses. The most important aspect of the "New" Sonic game would be all new Zone designs based on old favorites. Green Hill, Casino Night and Icecap would all make a return with completely new level designs and enemies - And although classic Sonic has never been big on power ups, when a bonus level is successfully completed, Sonic or Tails can call upon the power of the individual Chaos Emeralds for temporary effects.
