We here at The Clik love Halloween. After all, if there's one holiday that's all about "Characters", it's the day you can dress up as any one you like. And with all the creepies, crawlies, and creatures of the night getting ready for a marathon session of Jack-o-Lanterns and Trick-or-Treaters, we figured we'd put together a list of some of the best Halloween treats the video game world has to offer, all in convenient snack sized categories:
The "Best Bogeyman" Award: Pyramid Head (Silent Hill series), Konami
Growing up, we all had images of what was lurking in the shadows and imagined just what was behind those bumps in the night. Still, even the scariest nightmares you could imagine pale when compared to Silent Hill baddie, Pyramid Head. This skulking behemoth was frightening enough on his own, with his silent demeanor, bloodied butcher's smock, and that freakishly large metal pyramid helmet. But toss in the fact that he's usually dragging a huge friggin' knife that's almost as big as he is and, well, he's not something you'll cuddle up to at night. His creepiest appearance to date isn't even from a Silent Hill game, though. Believe it or not, the demented denizen actually made an appearance in a super-deformed cartoony form in Konami's 2008 DS release, New International Track and Field as an unlockable competitor.
Runner-Up: Nemesis (Resident Evil series), Capcom
The "Costume for Every Occasion" Award: Mario (Super Mario Bros. series), Nintendo

What would Halloween be without all the fun and interesting costumes? Well someone who's never had a hard time finding something to wear is Nintendo's flagship mascot and resident plumbing expert, Mario. Ever since the release of Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES, Nintendo's wardrobe department has been working overtime to keep Mario decked out in all kinds of crazy costumes. He's been everything from a frog to a raccoon to a turtle to (most recently) a bumblebee and a penguin. He's been covered in metal and even been a giant shoe. And that's just in his own games. Let's not forget all the times he's played doctor or referee or painter either. This guy's closest is bigger than most people's entire house. Mario is one character that's definitely got this Trick-or-Treating thing in the bag ... or coveralls.
Runner- Up: Chuck Greene (Dead Rising 2), Capcom
The "Classic Creeps" Award: Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES/Genesis/Wii Virtual Console), LucasArts

One Halloween tradition always seems to involve bringing back the classics in some way. Whether a character is a few weeks or a few decades old, odds are good you'll find someone dressed up as it. Well, when it comes to good games for Halloween, they just don't get any more "classic" than the old school LucasArts hit, Zombies Ate My Neighbors. The name was a little misleading though. Zeke and Julie weren't just trying to save suburbia from zombies. Nope, there were also vampires, werewolves, alien pod people, possessed dolls, mummies, and even, yes, a 50-foot baby. Thankfully, they were armed to the teeth with water guns, soda cans, silverware, and ... umm ... okay, so it seemed like a one-sided battle. But the whole things managed to come together and Zombies Ate My Neighbors never failed to put a smile of gamers' faces. It's the game that defines the phrase "cult classic" and easily a must have title for the Wii's Virtual Console.
Runner- Up: Ghosts n' Goblins (NES/Wii Virtual Console), Capcom
The "Golden Jack-o-Lantern" Award: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3/Xbox 360), Konami

When pushed to find that one video game franchise that epitomizes everything that makes Halloween so much fun, you don't need to look any further than Konami's best-selling Castlevania franchise. You've got your haunted house (well, castle). You've got bloodsucking vampires, legions of the undead, supernatural spirits, and just about every other staple of horror movies since the dawn of time. And who needs Buffy when you've got a vampire slayer named "Belmont"? The series' latest addition, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, resurrects the franchise with a long overdue reboot. This time around, it's Gabriel Belmont who wields the whip with the power to lay the smackdown on the forces of darkness. And as Gabriel comes knocking on evil's doorstep this Halloween, the bad guys will feel the wrath of all his new tricks ... leaving the rest of us with a tasty, tasty video game treat.
Runner- Up: Plants vs. Zombies (PC/iPhone/Xbox 360), PopCap Games
