Date: 12/24/2010
2010 was a major year for mobile gaming. Angry Birds, released at the close of 2009, dominated the phones and hearts of gamers worldwide. Now, as the year draws to a close, you may be looking to gift some of the new apps of 2010 to friends and family, or just pick up a few of the lesser known (but definitely awesome) iOS titles that you missed along the way. Below The Clik picks out ten apps to check out this holiday season.
Pocket Frogs
Of all the freemium games on the iTunes store, not many can compare to the collecting excitement of Pocket Frogs. In this game, your goal is to collect every fantastical species of frog possible. You can do this by buy breeding frogs, catching frogs in your pond or buying frogs from the store. The game also gets very social, allowing gamers to gift frogs and other items like backdrops and growth potions to their friends. You can also build up your frogs by taking them to the pond so that they can catch flies and grow. If you're the type of gamer who likes to RPG dungeon crawl or catch and build up Pokemon characters then you'll definitely enjoy this title. And, hey, it is free.
Reckless Racing
Personally, this is my favorite iOS racer of 2010. Why? For starters, the controls actually work. This wild racer reminds me of the overwhelmingly fun experience of playing games like Twisted Metal, but focuses solely on racing. The game allows you to use just about every control style imaginable, from standard directional controls to steering wheels or accelerometer controls. The graphics are superb, especially on the iPhone 4 retina display. In addition to standard races, there's also a delivery mode where you compete for best times doing pickups and dropoffs.
Chuck Gnome
This is one of those strange iPhone apps that sound weird, but are just fun to play. In this game you literally chuck little gnomes by slingshot at various targets for points. Depending on how well you do, environments change mid game offering some great in game diversity. The game comes with only six boards, but you'll spend most of your time competing for higher scores.
Rhythm Spirit
This game gets points for being one of the coolest concepts of the year. The game is a mix of runner games and boss battles. However, Rhythm Spirit is all about fighting while staying in rhythm with the music playing. Two lines appear at the top of the screen, representing your offensive and defensive attacks. Action items move across the lines to the center, when the reach you must press the corresponding button to perform the offensive or defensive move. While the game is short, hearing sword slashes in tune to a techno-rock beat makes for a terrific experience.
Fruit Ninja
Fruit Ninja is citrus slicing bliss and another one of the top rated games of 2010. Halfbrick did an excellent job with this release. In it, fruit fall from the sky and your job is to slice as many fruit as possible with finger slashes before they fall off the screen. You can chain slices together, just don't slice a bomb or it's game over. This is one of those games where it is actually worth listening to the sound effects. Each type of fruit makes a different gushing sound when sliced, which puts you right inside the game. Plus, Fruit Facts from Sensei put Fruit Ninja at the top of any holiday buy list.
Air Attack
Air Attack may be an action adventure, but the gameplay is as simple as moving your finger around the screen to guide your vintage dogfighter through enemy territory. Machine gun fire is automatic. You can also pick up power ups and drop bombs to destroy bridges.
Trees of Doom
Finally, Wee Ninja made his gaming return with Trees of Doom for the iPhone. Building on the Ninjatown DS game and the Shawnimals toy series, Trees of Doom is the premiere climbing game of 2010. Gamers jump between trees while avoiding the Wee Devil and various other slippery and treacherous climbing hazards. Addictive doesn't begin to describe this game. Gamers will have endless fun, climbing to new heights. Though the trees remain the core part of the environment, the backdrop will often change as well as the time of day.
Puppet War
Call it the most bizarrely fun game of 2010. Puppet War was labeled a FPS for First Puppet Shooter. In this game, your job was to take down an onslaught of rebellious puppets who went rogue. You're probably thinking, "Hmm, if puppets went rogue, what would I use to take them down." Luckily, this title offers gamers a variety of methods to take down puppets. You can use pincers to take off a puppets nose or go crazy with a plunger gun or semiautomatic. Purists can stick to the good old fashioned baseball bat. Works every time.
iBomber 2
iBomber 2 from Cobra was another flying game worth checking out. This is one of the more difficult and challenging iPhone apps on the market that has appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers. In iBomber 2 you bomb both air, land and sea targets from above. There is an assortment of different bomb types to use for explosive variety. Gameplay does take some getting used to. You have to remember that there's a delay between when you drop a bomb and when it actually lands. Once you get that down, the fun can begin.
Cut the Rope
Not much can be said about this game, except that it's one of the best puzzle games of 2010. After selling 1 million copies in 10 days, Cut the Rope staked its claim as the premiere iOS game of 2010. In this game, your goal is to simply cut one or more ropes so that a piece of candy can fall into the mouth of an Om Nom that some mysterious person left on your doorstep. It sounds easy, but you'll play over and over as you try to collect all the stars in the shortest time possible, before feeding your new pet Om Nom.
